Reviewers Reviewed: Gender in Book Criticism

VIDA's annual counts of bylines by gender have repeatedly included pie charts showing that more books by men are reviewed, and more criticism by men is published. While venues such as Harper's and The New Republic have shown improvement since the count began, only 24% of books reviewed in the New York Review of Books last year were by women. What gatekeeping process determines which books get reviewed and by whom? How can women writers break into book reviewing and how can change be effected?
